Was following Dee's & Janet's discussion about the Benn surname. Janet was kind enough to toss in a question about my Benn buried in Bethel. According to family records, Robert P. Benn 1789-1848 is buried there. Dee had said if she remembered, she was going to look for the name in the Cemetery. Did she find time to do this?

Second question:
GABRIEL BENN was born in Fredericks County in 1802. He married JANE BROWN January 07, 1821. In Frederick County. Have a copy of a certification of the marriage which is dated 1997 and is certified by the clerk for Frederick County.

The clerk certified the BEEN not BENN was married. What are the clerk's looking at to certify this information? Would there be documentation available to tell us who these peoples parents were? Would there be birth information available from 1802?

Thanking anyone in advance that can help me out. Also, appreciated the Bethel Tour.

Actually I was the one who said something about looking for the Benn grave. I completely forgot all about it during the course of the day's events.

Helped move a few tables in and out and visited with relatives there so I didn't get around to looking for the Benn grave.

I'll do that sometime soon. I usually take a trip over to the Church every now and then to make sure everything is ok there and nothing is amiss.

You should be able to view an actual copy of George Benn's marriage record on film. The State of VA has copies of the actual marriage bond or you can rent the same film through L.D.S. library system.

IF I understand your comment about the clerk certified a copy in 1997, are you saying you do not have a copy of the actual document ?.

To sort out how a name is spelled you will want to find as many original records as you can. This does not mean the clerk at the time of the writting of the document did not write down different spellings of the same name. We have that problem with Robert MacKay surname.

However, I really do think you have the problem of two different surnames/families: Berlin & Benn. To add to your problem the families Bear & Bean lived in Frederick Co. VA.

All of the following surnames: Benn, Berlin, Bear & Bean, the writing could be hard to figure out which was which. I do not see a surname spelled Been.

I have the same problem with the two surnames: Ship/Shipp (mine) and Shipe.

Now with the Wm. R. Berlin who died as a prisoner in NY, I do not know if you could find a death certificate the people at the time of his death knew who his parents were and other information about him.

But there would appear to be two different soldiers:

Wm. Benn who died in VA
Wm. R. Berlin who died in NY

Good luck with your search.

Thank you both for the quick answer. Will look forward to Michael checking out the Benn name at the cemetery.

As far as the original marriage cert., no I don't have an original copy. I think you answered my question. Wasn't sure if such a document exsisted. The document was passed on to me and I found it strange that a county would go to all the trouble of doing a certificate when they could have just given someone a copy of the original. The state of Illinois has done that for me a couple of times when the original was too faint to take a readable copy so I thought perhaps that was the case for marriage certs in Clarke County. Going to need to spend a few lunch hours at our local FHC and see what I can find.
