I have three copies of original records dealing with Frances (.....?) Mitchell Barnett which would appear to be in conflict.
1. Frederick Co. VA Marriage Record 21 Sep 1799 marriage of Ambrose Barnett & Frances Mitchell, stated that she was the widow & relict of Cary Mitchell deceased.
2. Frederick Co. VA Land Deed Book 27 page 16 clearly stated that Ambrose Barnett & his wife Frances, late Frances Mitchell widow & relict of Cary Mitchell selling her dower rights to a tract of land once owned during the life time of said Cary Mitchell, dated 24 Sep 1800
3. Clarke Co. VA will of Frances Barnett written 14 Sep 1844, probated 24 May 1847. In this document she named as her brother James Mitchell and some of his children: Frances S. (Mitchell) Gatewood & James Mitchell Jr. & Sarah E. Mitchell, named the children of her sister Elizabeth (Mitchell) Brownley: Frances Brownley, Elizabeth & John Brownley. In John Brownley's estate papers he also named as his aunt--Frances Barnett.
The only way I see these records fitting into place would be as follows:
Cary Mitchell died by Jul 1798 in Frederick Co. VA, date of estate inventory. As stated on Frederick Co. VA Land Deeds & Marriage Bond, his widow Frances married a second time to said Ambrose Barnett. They must have had a daughter also named Frances Barnett, who died in Clarke Co. VA by 1847. The siblings named in her will would have been her half-brother & sister.
So Cary Mitchell & Frances.....? had the following children:
1. Elizabeth "Betty" Mitchell married Archibald Brownley. Michael's line
2. James Mitchell m. Susanna Catlett
3. John C. Mitchell died 14 Sep 1837 "Pleasant Green" Clarke Co. VA. It would appear had no issue, his estate division named the children of his siblings.
4. Capt. Wm. Mitchell married Matilda Johnston died 29 Sep 1835 "La Grange" Warren Co. VA. My line.
Hope to find out more about the Mitchell family as I go through Frederick Co. VA Land Deeds.

If you've read some of the articles I have in the section called "Bethel Memorial, Inc. Memorabilia" you will see references being made to her, she being referred to as "Old Widow Brownley".
Anyhow, she's buried at Bethel but wasn't originally. From what I understand that close to the time of the death of my great-great-grandma Ella (Heflybower) McKay, who herself is a granddaughter of Fielding Sowers & Sallie Brownley (the daughter of Elizabeth), she asked her son, Beverly Brownley McKay, to promise her that he would remove the graves of Fielding Sowers, Sallie (Brownley) Sowers & Elizabeth (Mitchell) Brownley from where they were buried at the old Brownley-Mitchell-Heflybower graveyard near White Post and re-inter them at the Bethel Graveyard. I have photos of these graves on display in the Bethel Picture page.
Some day I will try and find the Brownley-Mitchell-Heflybower graveyard. I believe that some of Ella & Edwin's sisters are buried there. It's likely overgrown with vegetation now.

According to Warren Co. VA Land Deed D 302 dated 1 Jan 1850,18 Feb 1850 Matilda (Johnston) Mitchell sold her husband's Wm. Mitchell farm to Morgan Johnston for $8000. A note in probate section stated that said M. Johnston granted to said Matilda and her children the right to be buried in the said farm grave yard on the property.
I believe other researchers have remarked there had been grave markers on the farm, but they had been removed. Morgan and his wife removed to Prospect Hill Cemetery.
So I suspect my ancestors Wm. Mitchell & his wife Matilda Johnston were buried on the property, but no marker remain.
