Thank you so much for all the time you have spent in answering my queries on McCarty D. ROY of Va. Nothing has turned up so far, but I keep looking for his parents, marriage record and burial spot.
Wiley S. Roy, I believe is connected to the same bunch of Roys as I believe my McCarty is. Wiley S. Roys parents were William Roy and Ann (Anny) Stinson. His grandfather was John Roy, one of three brothers. I have a lot of data on Roys that Mrs. Good did for me. Be glad to mail it to you if you give me your snail address.
Glad you sent me to this site -- McCarty is said to have come from Scotland.
McCarty's son, Thomas M. Roy was enlisted into civil wae by a Buck at Conrads store in Front Royal.
Keep me in mind if you happen to see some thing on my McCarty D. Roy.
Thank-you again - you must be a very busy lady with all of the help you give others.

As I remember it McCarty D. Roy fought in the Civil War. So was he born c1830 ???. It is a shame Laura Virgina Hale is no longer with us. She might be able to answer your questions.

I think I told you I have a connection by marriage with Roy & Pilcher family of Fauquier Co. VA. Wiley S. Roy born c1800 married Sarah Pilcher in Fauquier Co. VA. 23 Jan 1832. I have not tried to find out how & if he figures into your group of Roys.

Are you aware that in the book of early Fauquier Co. VA Land Deeds Book 1-6 by John K. Gott the name Roy does appear.

In any case as I am going through compiling Fauquier Co. VA Land Deed I will be looking for the above Wiley S. Roy, just to fill out my records for VA families.

The next group of film I have ordered through public library Frederick Co. VA Land Deeds 1802-1814. I will keep your Roy family in mind.

There they came from before VA, I have no idea. I would not TRUST "family tale" about them coming Scotland or anywhere else.

The Stinson surname sounds familar to me but I can't place it as now. Perhaps a family that inter-married with one of my families. These families seems to be all inter-related.

Good Luck.

You are going the right thing by going from oldest known generation back in time.

But two books come to my attend concerning the Roy family. Index of Wills by Torrence 1632-1800 puts the surname in early Essex & Spotsylvania counties & one in Berkeley county.

Dorothy Ford Wulfeck's book on Early VA Marriages mentions the surname in some of the same locations and in Caroline Co. VA. Do you know who he was:

"Roy, Thomas settled 1744, Caroline Co. VA m. Judith Beverley of Port Royal, VA. Bagby, pp. 354-55. Thomas m. Judith......extrx, in 1740 of Rodham Kenner, clerk. See Court Suit in Caroline Co."

So from this you need to find the book by Bagby and lucky you there might be a court case Thomas Roy was involved. Always a gem for researchers. We are luck if our ancestors were always in court sorting out their affairs.

My Shipp family I believe lived in some of these same location early Essex to Caroline to Orange to Frederick Co. MD then to Frederick Co. VA & Shenandoah Co. VA, my great-great-grandfather Wm. H. Shipp buried in Midland, Fauquier Co. VA. My father's father Walter Eugene Shipp was born in Catlett, Fauquier Co. VA.

Just a thought, will keep the surname in mind. Next week will be going through all Minute & Order Books for Caroline Co. VA for the Shipp & Bridges family, will try to keep Roy name in mind.

Good Luck

Found in Fauquier Co. VA Land Deed Book 44,167, three children of Lydia (Morehead) Roy:

1. Sarah Roy named as wife of James Stinson

2. Beverly Roy named with his wife Jane (she signed the deed as Rachel J.)

3. Charles W. Roy

selling lands in Fauquier Co. VA which had been devised to their mother, Lucy Roy (now deceased), from the will of Charles Morehead. All the children living in Warren Co. VA as of Oct 1844. I can find said Sarah (Roy) Stinson and her husband on the 1850 census. And Beverly Roy and his wife and their son as well. I can't seem to find Charles W. Roy listed on the 1850 Warren Co. VA census.

I have just had the compiled book by John Vogt for Warren Co. VA Marriages 1836-1850:

"Roy, Beverly & Mary Jane Lawrence 8 Feb 1844, minister Z.I. Compton (1 January 1845)"

The minister's name should read Z.J. or Z.T. Compton. This family had Zachariah Taylor & Zachariah James Compton. The census & land deed give the name of Benj. wife as Rachel J. & Rachel Jane. So I do not know where Mr. Vogt came up with the first name of Mary.

Listed in John K. Gott the marriage of:

James Roy & Lydia Morehead on 3 Feb 1798.

There was a James Roy who died in 1818 in Fauquier Co. VA. But I do not know if the same man or not.

While looking at King William Co. VA records for my Mitchall & Hunt families, references were given for the Roy family who also removed to Frederick Co. VA from this county.

The records for King William Co. VA have pretty much been destroyed, but you might check the records that I have remained. Personally, later in time I plan to check King & Queen Co. VA (also the records spotty) and Spotsylania Co. VA.

Good luck with your research.

Thomas Roy of Port Royal married one of my ancestors, Judith Beverley. She was the daughter of Harry Beverley and Elizabeth Smith. Harry did the first survey of the town of Tapahanock, as well as paticipate in the survey team that defined the border between Virginia and North Carolina. He was also Clerk of the VA House of Burgesses. Hope this is helpful.

I wish I had "Find a Grave" years ago. You will find Roy entries on this site, but if related to your group I can say.

Another source on line "free" is Family DNA has Y search, there are Roy test results given. If related to you group I can't say. You can send off e-mail to the person you supplied the sample.

Good luck with your search.
