Found Shenandoah Co. VA Land Deeds Book FF page 264, Alexander McKay and his wife Rosanna selling her land devised to her from her former husand--Dadach Conner.

Dadach/Zadock Conner's will probated in Shenandoah Co. VA on 13 Oct 1817,named his wife Rosanna, no children. I am just looking at Amelia C. Gilbert's book "Shenandoah Co. VA Abstracts of Wills 1772-1850".

Alexander McKay married in Shenandoah Co. VA on 3 Feb 1819 to Rosanna Conner.

Alex McKay married in Shenandoah Co. VA on 20 Feb 1833 to Leuretia Warren

Were these the marriages of the same man ? Which McKay family does he belong ?

It would appear from the 1782 & 1785 tax list covering Shenandoah Co. VA there lived a man named Alexander McKay/McKoy.

A generation later listed on the 1820 Shenandoah Co. VA census:

Alexander McKay has in his household: 1 male under 10, 1 male 16-26 & 1 female 45 & up.

If this is the same Alexander McKay who married Rosanna Conner, then either she died by the 1820 census, or Alexander married a woman 19 years old than himself. Or the woman 45 & up could have been his mother. If she (Rosanna) died giving birth then that would explain the one son under the age of 10 in 1820. He would have been her son. But on the other hand Alexander could have had a wife before Rosanna Conner.

If--and this is a very big if (on page 164 of my latest McKay book) Floyd McKay born 4 Mar 1814 in Shenandoah Co. VA (this according to sources in IN) really was born in Shenandoah Co. VA, then Alexander McKay's household is the only one which he would have fit into according to sex and age grouping.

No listing on 1830 Shenandoah Co. VA for Alexander McKay. I can't explain as of now who was the other Alex who married in Shenandoah in 1833 to Leuretia Warren.

Three questions:

1. Was this a case of a Alexander SR. (born about 1750) & JR. (born about 1794) living in Shenandoah ?

2. Which McKay family do they belong ? They were not descendants of our Robert. Where was a Alexander McKay living earlier in Chester Co. PA/Cecil Co. MD area, or are they related to the John McKay of Northumberland Co. VA who purchased land from Lord Fairfax.

3. Where did this group of McKay removed to from VA ? They can not be found in VA after 1830 census.

For Floyd McKay (husband of Lucinda Vaughan, she was a descendant of our Robert Mackay) to belong to the family of James MacKay Sr. (son of Robert SR), then his birth location should read IN, not VA. Or the year of birth should be earlier.

James' family members had removed out of VA by 1814.

Asa McKay (son of Jacob Sr.) wife's name still unknown to me, remained in VA until late 1830's, we know the names of his children who lived to adulthood: Edith, James & John Green McKay. This was a Frederick Co. VA group of McKays.

Abisha McKay married 1808 in Shenandoah Co. VA to Mary "Polly" Laham, removed by 1814 or earlier to IN. His will named his childrens--no Floyd.

More needs to be learned about Alexander McKay of Shenandoah Co. VA. If Floyd can be found to be connected to said Alexander, then I can see no way he was related to the family of Robert Mackay Sr.

I copied the following at the Mt. Zion M.E. cemetery in Craig Twp. about 1972.

Floyd McKay, born Shenandoah Co., Va., March 4, 1814-March 3, 1882.

His age in the 1850 census in 36; in 1860 it's 46. This is consistent with an 1814 birthdate. The 1850 census says his birth date is Virginia.

He certainly could not have been Abisha's son because Abisha left a will. See my note on Asa's family. I do not believe that Asa lived in Indiana, but that his widow Milly Lanham moved to Indiana by 1838 when Floyd m. Lucinda Vaughn (also buried at Mt. Zion) Since Floyd's daughter thought Enos and Floyd were brothers, as did Morris McKay's granddaughter, why not believe them?

Abisha patented land in Section 31 Twp. 2N Range 3W on 8 March 1810. This land is in Craig Twp. about two miles NE of lamb. Many McKays owned land in this area. Robert McKay who m. Mary Cain owned land in Section 31. James McKay who m. Mary Johnston owned land just south of this. Abisha may have reached Indiana a few years earlier.

None of the land deeds or other records I have found for Asa McKay give his wife's name, according to census, his wife died before Asa.

No indication he married into Lanham family. Could be the same family lived in P.G. Co. MD.

Not sure even if Asa left VA, just can't find him elsewhere.

Hope to find out more about his family as I comb through Frederick Co. VA Land Deeds and other records.

If Floyd McKay was born in VA 1814, the family members of James MacKay Sr, are not going to return back to VA from IN to give birth to said Floyd.

So even if said Floyd McKay later lived in IN next to these McKay does not make him a member of their families.

Asa McKay was the son of Jacob McKay, lived in Frederick Co. VA. Wife's name not known at this time. And I am sure she died before said Asa, she did not removed to IN. We know through land deeds the names of said Asa McKay's children. No Floyd McKay.

I say again, if Floyd was really born in Shenandoah Co. VA, then look to Alexander McKay. He would not be a member of the family of Robert MacKay Sr. of early Shenandoah Valley.

I have located an Alexander McKay living 1781-1783 living in this area of PA. I have seen other surnames who I know removed down to Shenandoah Co. VA in these records.

Did this Alexander McKay removed down to Shenandoah Co. VA, I will be looking for records.

I will be ordering records for Montgomery Co. PA, Cumberland Co. PA & Phildelphia Co. VA time period of 1734 to 1800. These are in connection with my Schipp/Ships/Ship/Shipp family.

If others want we to be on the look out for other surnames, speak now.

Did a paper "Descendants of Robert McKay of VA Who Came To IN" I have not been able to read her complete text. Linked to four to five different Ancestry Tree people who claim Floyd McKay as ancestor have quoted her paper.

These same people have the parents of Floyd as Asa McKay (son of Jacob). We know this is wrong, because, this is Gerard McKay blood line which has been proven by paper documentation and Y marker DNA test.

People are mixing together Asia McKay of Frederick Co. MARYLAND and Asa McKay of Shenandoah Co. VA.

A few others have renamed one of our family group as "Moses Floyd McKay" husband of B.S. Gaines. His name was just Moses. His descends have been documented in law suit filed in connection with Gaines Family of Culpeper Co. VA. No Floyd Mckay.

People are looking in the wrong place for the parentage of Floyd McKay--look in MARYLAND. Instead of that they are making up additional family members of Robert MacKay Sr. so they can find a place for their Floyd McKay.

A simple Y marker test would settle this matter.

We should not just assume that all McKays living in Switzerland Co. IN belong to the family of said Robert Mackay Sr.

Because what people recall can be in error.

Fact--Asia McKay married in Frederick Co. MARYLAND at Evangelical Lutheran Church of Middletown, Frederick Co. VA to Amelia Lanham. On 12 May 1812

Fact--There is no record that Henry Lanham who died in Switzerland Co. IN was the father of said Amelia. She was not named in his will. Malinda Latham married George McKay.

Fact--various families using the name Lanham DNA Project are showing they not related. Her group living Frederick Co. MARYLAND could be related to the ones of Henry Lanham who came from Pr.Wm.Co. MD or not. This has not been established.

Asia McKay name was changed in IN to read Asa. No record that he was related to my group of Mackay started by Robert Sr. If you have death records stating Floyd and Enos were son of an Asa & Millie McKay, which couple are you referring? People who descend from this couple need to check land deeds in Frederick Co. MARYLAND to see if and when this couple removed to IN.
