You can buy Gertrude E. Gray's books "Virginia Northern Neck Land Grants 1694-1742, 1742-1775, 1775-1800 & 1800-1862 on line from Amazon.com or write to the publisher Genealogical Publishing Co. of Baltimore, MD.

As far as our McKay Family I found little in them that we do not already know. However I did note a lot of entries of the various surnames connected by marriage to our MacKay/McKay.

Vol I 1694-1742:

1. on page 56 mentioned Wm. Mitchell of Lancaster Co. VA deceased 18 Jul 1663 in St. Mary White Chapel Parish had a warrent 12 Nov 1713. This man could prove interesting because I am search for the location of my Mitchell family before living in Frederick Co. VA.

this volume does have entries for surname of: Triplett, Jenkins, Barber, McCarty (two different families), Calmes, Ridgeway, Dew, Russell, Mitchell, Mauzy, Lehew, Carter, Duff, Melton, Srother, Grubb & Ball,

Volume II 1742-1775 nothing new with our McKay family. Does have an entry dealing with the Duff law suit.

Volume III 1775-1800

1. on page 50--does have an interesting entry about a "John McKay of Northumberland Co. purchased 409a on Br. of Sleepy Creek. dated 4 Sep 1780. This is of interest because here is a McKay coming in the area where "our" MacKay/McKay family lived and is not directly related to our family. Was there a relationship with him and Alexander McKay listed on the tax list of Shenandoah Co. VA in 1789.

Also the above entry mentioned the land surveyed for Fitzhugh McKay by John Mauzy. Who was he ?

2. page 64. we have Alexander McKay purchased land from George Coffman in Frederick Co. VA dated 1 Apr 1788. Who was he ?

This volume also does have entries concerning some of the families that inter-married with our McKay.

Volume IV 1800-1862

Really does not have information that would be considered new to us. Does again have entries concerning families that inter-married with the McKay family.

These books just list the buyers of the land dates surrounding the event and bear description of the land. No linkage information given to the reader. These books will leave the reader wanting more. Check the original records.

In David Dobson's book "The Original Scots Colonists of Early American Supplement 1607-1707"

page 108 "Mackay, John in Northumberland County, Virginia 1651. EVI"

page 104 "Macoy, John, in Northumberland County, Virginia, 1651 EVI"

EVI stands for his source of "Early Virginia Immigrants, 1623-1666" by Greer, Baltimore, 1978.

Needless to say I and well as others have never found a connection between these early Mackay of VA with our family of Robert Mackay.

Will put under another query other MacKay (various) spelling found in David Dobson books.

I have been e-mail by this Mackay researcher. Her father kit #79993. Their numbers closer to Daniel Mackay of early MA than to our's (Robert Sr.) really not at all.

Her line it would appear to be a Mackay Family that started out in early VA. Believe her line back to King Wm. Co. VA & New Kent Co. VA.

She is trying to make a connection with said John Mackay of early Northumberland Co. VA with her line.

I am now coming into the time period in Shennandoah Co. VA land deeds where I hope to find out more about Alexander & Asa McKay (second man named Asa). I do not see that they belong to "our" (Robert Sr.) family. Did they belong to said John Mackay of Northumberland Co. VA?

There was also a couple named James & his wife Mary McKay of Frederick Co. VA, same generation as Robert's Sr. second son James & his wife Mary of Shenandoah Co. VA. Who was the first couple ?

She mentioned that she knows some of her family removed into KY. We know branches of our Mackay family removed into Kenton Co. KY. I have no idea if people are mixing together the two different families.

In any case, I think this is very good news to be e-mailed by a researcher who can trace their line back to early VA. I wish researchers who have traced their lines back to Frederick Co. MD or Cecil Co. MD would drop me a line.

The more people lay their cards on the table, the more help they might receive in turn.
