NEW CLAN HISTORY: I am a bookshop in Australia that specializes in Scotish and Irish Books - new and out of print. We are just publishing a new clan history - Clan Mackay- and thought you may be interested in maybe passing on information to its availability. I have given details of book below and would be interested in any feedback.
Kind regards
Ian Cronin
PUBLICATION OF NEW CLAN HISTORY:
CHIEFS OF CLAN MACKAY AND THEIR CADETS by John Barth
Grub St Bookshop, Melbourne 1999. 112 pp. Perfect bindings (paperback A4 size). New . Limited to 300 copies.
Grub St Bookshop is publishing the first comprehensives family history of the Clan Mackay since the turn of the century.
This will be a limited edition of 300 copies signed by the author. $55.00. (plus postage). Planned for release 15th December 1999.
Details:
The Chiefs of Clan Mackay and their Cadets: Volume One in a series on the genealogies of Scottish Chiefs and Scottish Heads of Families. To be followed later by the family history of the Chiefs of Clan Macdonald, Mackenzie, etc. This work on the Mackays is the first comprehensive family history of the clan since the turn of the century, and traces the chiefs' descent from the 10th century Hereditary Abthanes of Dull and Hereditary Lay Abbots of Dunkeld in the county of Perth, Scotland.
Members of the Royal House of Tir Conaill and the Sacred Kindred of St Columba, the family are ultimately descended from the 5th century Irish King, Niall of the Nine Hostages (ancestor of the O'Neills and McNeills), and are also of the same family as the Royal House of Dunkeld that gave Scotland its sovereigns from Crinan the Thane (who was killed fighting Macbeth) in the late 10th century onwards.
The book traces the chiefly line from Duncan, Hereditary Lay Abbot of Dunkeld (died in 965) down to the first acknowledged Chief of the Clan, Iye MacAoidh of Strathnaver, in the 13th century, and to the present head of the family, Hugh William Mackay, 14th Baron Reay in the Peerage of Scotland, 27th Chief of Clan Mackay, and Baron Mackay van Ophemert in the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
The book also gives extensive pedigrees for the major cadet branches of the Clan, including the Bains (who were originally Mackays), and the Mackays of Scoury, Bighouse, Strathy, Melness and Sandwood, in the counties of Sutherland and Caithness, and their many descendants over more than thirty generations. It traces many of the overseas lines, including Mackays in Australia, and includes a Clan Bibliography.
Orders can be placed through Grub St Bookshop. We are pleased to pass on any information or receive order.
