I do not why I missed this will the first time I view Frederick Co. VA Wills, perhaps were is small differences between what is offered at L.D.S. library and what was on Reel #55 VA State microfilm for Frederick Co. VA Wills, etc....
Jacob Sowers' will of 1822, gives his place of residence as in town of Winchester, named the following relations: only son John Colston, Ann Sowers, wife of John Heiskell, Sydney Sowers wife of Nathan Parkins, Margaret Sowers wife of Lewis Hoff, Elizabeth Sowers wife of James Glass & deceased daughter Margaret Sowers wife of Wm. Waller (her portion to her three children: Eveline Stubblefield, Emily Waller & Edwin Waller). Mary's married name was hard to read looking for another record to be sure of the name.
Also on the same film the will of Margaret Hampton, the mother of Jacob Sowers' wife Isabella. Her father was George Hampton. It appears that some if not all of the Hampton's of Frederick Co. VA were descendants of John Hampton the Scottish Quaker from East Lothian/Freehold, NJ.
Still need to find the first husband of Elizabeth Branson who married a "Mr." Hampton had two children and then married Daniel Cloud. She I believe is buried at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Front Royal, VA. Mr. Hampton could have been a member of the same group of Hamptons.
Also a connection with the same Hampton to a Wm. Johnston/Johnson, need to find out if the same family which Matilda Johnston belonged who married Wm. Mitchell. They produced Etta Double Sowers.
Hope to find more gems concerning our various families in the next coming months.

I look forward to seeing more of this.
I've been interested in having copies of Jacob Sr.'s will up on-line as well as Jr.'s and Daniel's will. In addition to that it would be interesting to have his wife Catherine's will up as well. Catherine's will, as you may recall, ended up causing a dispute between some of her children. This dispute was resolved when Bethel Church intervened and those involved reconciled and turned their portions of the estate over to the church.
Also, I'm interested in knowing more about Jacob Jr.'s daughter Elizabeth who married James Glass. The estate Glen Burne which was the old home of the James Wood family descended into people with the surname of Glass. One of the descendants of this family married my 1st cousin.
Are they descendants of Elizabeth Sowers?

e-mail me your street address for Jacob Sowers Jr.'s will.
I thought I sold you one of my Sowers book, copy of Jacob Sowers Sr. & Catherine Sowers' will in it.
Will in the future look into the other children of Jacob Jr.
That would be good if you could put these will on the web cite; so I will not be "nickel & dime" to death making copies of things.
Believe I have copies of some of his children marriage bond found in Frederick Co. VA.
Also I am finding some VERY INTERESTING connection between the Scottish Quaker John Hampton's descendants and members of the Sowers, Branson & Johnston families. We are related to the Sowers & Branson and I to the Johnston family of Frederick Co. VA.
I had a devil of a time with another researcher, Ed Hamilton of CA figuring out our Johnston, but I think today I have the line.
Etta Double Sowers and my mother were cousins; both descendant from John Hampton of Scotland & NJ.
Hope to learn more about John MacKay Sr. of Freehold, NJ, next week.
Let me have your street address if you want a copy of Jacob Sowers Jr.'s will.

Yes, you did send me a copy of the Sowers Genealogy.
I forgot that Jacob Sr.'s and Catherine's wills were in it.
I'll have to get them up on-line here in the near future.
I'll send you my street address so you can send me Jacob Jr.'s will.
It would be nice to have a few other McKay wills up as well.
I think I've seen Jacob McKay III's will somewhere.
I'm going to contact a fellow I know on-line who is currently in Great Britain right now doing research on the Tuscarora Indians.
Perhaps he can look into East Lothian Scotland and see what he can find there.
I'll have him post his findings on the forum.

I am switching gears here from the Ferguson postings.
I've recently received a copy of a Superior Court of Chancery court action dated 1817 Beeler &c v Herndon &c which includes the surnames: Beeler, Herndon, Waller, Colson (dec'd), Hampton, Berry, Heiskell, Holladay, Piles/Poyles, Sowers, Pollard, Massey, Davis, Catlett, Hammond, Fulton, Helm. Localities include: Spotsylvania Co., Caroline Co., Sullivan Co. (TN).
Plaintiffs: Beeler et al, Thomas Catlett and Mary Poyles Catlett his wife.
Defendants: Edward Herndon (exor), William Waller (exor); Thomas Colson (decd), Charles Hampton
Apparently Thomas Colson (decd) left a legacy to the above families and I am trying to find the relationships between them. I believe this is Thomas Colson, Jr. who died abt 1805 in Spotsylvania Co., VA. He may be the son of Thomas Colson Sr. who died in Frederick Co., VA in 1789 (Will posted on the internet). The Will names wife Ann, son Thomas, daughter Mary Hamton, granddaughter Isabella Sowers.
Isabella Sowers is the daughter of George Hampton and Mary Colson Hampton. The Chancery court document lists the children of Isabella Sowers. It also lists the children of all the above named famlies.
Dee Ann, do you have any information regarding these families, or a copy of Thomas Colson, Jr.'s will who died in Spotsylvania Co., VA in 1805? I am trying to determine how the Beeler's are connected to Thomas Colson (dec'd). Did Thomas Colson, Sr. have other children not listed in his Will?

The short answer would be, no I do not have Thomas Colston of Spotsylvania Co. VA will.
As it happens I have on my "film wish list" some films dealing with Spotsylvania to try to sort out my Pilcher family. I will be order first:
Marriages 1795-1853
Wills 1824 to 1833
Land Deeds 1809-1821
So I will see what I can find on Colston family.
In the book by Virginia G. Meynard "The Venturers" on page 363, the children of George Hampton with wife Mary Colson (sic) the book has her the daughter of John Colson of Spotsylvania Co. VA & Richmond Co. VA, so the book does have errors. Some of the names of her children are mentioned in your piece:
1. Thomas Colson Hampton m. Mrs. Frances Deggs Pollard
2. Charles Chester Colson Hampton
3. George Hampton Jr.
4. Joseph Hampton
5. Mary Hampton m..............BERRY
6. Isabella Hampton m. Jacob SOWERS
7. Anna Hampton m.............Piles
8. Margaret Hampton m. Godlove HEISKELL
9. Sarah Hampton m. Benj. Holliday
10. Judith Hampton m. Capt. John HERNDON
11. Franics Hampton (female) m. Wm. POLLARD
You might find out more reading through Frederick Co. VA records

You say you have a copy of the actual Chancery Case in hand, and it doesn't say how the people are related ? All those kind of legal document I have seen go into detail how each person in the case are related.
Unless you are just viewing the information found on line dealing with chancey suits. The library doesn't have Frederick Co. VA cases on line and just have a listing about the people named in the case but no further information.
As I recall you are related to Michael through Strother or Ferguson families? I have placed some additional information about marriages for those surnames on Frederick Co. VA Rootweb.
Good luck with your research.

Yes, I received copies of the Chancery documents from the Circuit Court Clerk in Fredericksburg, VA.
The lawsuit which began in 1806 is in regard to the distribution of the funds of Thomas Colson's legacy. The Complaints/Answers/Exhibit gives the family surnames and lists the children of each family involved in the case. The only relationship given in any of the documents is the Helm and Hammond relationship, who were nieces. I would like to locate a transcription of Thomas Colson 1805 Will. Perhaps it will shed some light on the relationship of the Beeler family (Charles, Joseph, George & Frederick -all brothers).
The other surnames; Hampton, Berry, Hieskill, Herndon, Holladay, Massey, Pollard, Sowers, Piles are the daughter's of Mary Colson Hampton (sister of Thomas Colson). Did Thomas have other siblings? Perhaps the others in the lawsuit are related to Thomas Colson's wife.

The L.D.S. library were I go does have the Spotsylvania Co. VA Will Index and Thomas Colson's will is offered grouping 1804-1810. You can order the film through State of VA or L.D.S. library.
I do not know if I will be ordering film dealing with the wills, because my Pilcher did not file any wills. Their names do appear on the land deed index so I will be ordering that film in the next months.
Good luck with your research.
P.S. our public library here in Fairfax, VA has a very good web site with links to others that have orignial documents on line, you might want to view it:
fairfaxcounty.gov/library
also a web site called
Binnsgenealogy.com
the librarian at the public library said they are also a place to view originial records on line.
