Robert S. McKay's oldest son by his first wife Virginia Grubbs, was named Wm. F. McKay. He was born 1820 married before 1844 to his first cousin Mildred.

Found a will today of Catherine Grubs (sic) dated 17 Mar 1847 probated May 1849 in Warren Co. VA. Found on State of VA reel #9.

In her will she named daughter Eleanor Bartlett (son-in-law Wm. D.) and two of their children: Catherine J. & Margaret V. Bartlett. She also named granddaughter Sarah V. McKay, granddaughter Mildred McKay, wife of Wm. F. McKay, grandson Wm. F. McKay, great-grandson Henry Clay McKay.

So this would mean that Wm. F. McKay's mother Virginia was the daughter of said Catherine Grubs (sic).

Now Wm. F. & Mildred McKay's children were: Sarah V. McKay, Henry Clay McKay & Duffy McKay (born 1848 was not born).

If I knew the surname of Mildred who married Wm. F. McKay part of the mystery would be solved. But at this point I do not know if her mother was a Grubbs or father was.

I have found a land deed that named Wm. F. & Mildred McKay, John J. Cooksey & his wife Winfred, Sarah Ann Smith & Mourning Smith each with equal share of stock in Rappahannock Mining Co. they were selling said stock in 1844 in Stafford Co. VA.

Have pondered the thought that the above women were her sisters, then her surname would have been Smith. Need to find a marriage between a man named Smith and woman sister to Virginia Grubbs.

Commonwealth of VA Reel 57 Frederick Co. VA Wills, written 11 Jan 1828 probated 3 Mar 1828, will of
Conrad Grubbs of Winchester.

Named his wife as Lucy and the following children: Margaret married to a Burgess, Conrad Jr., John, Lucy married to John Smoke, Mary married to Aulick, Wm. B., Henry, Susanna married to Copenhaver, Lewis Grubbs, Eliza married to Everley & Frederick B. Grubbs.

I have not been able to connect Virginia Grubs to this group of Grubbs.

However the above Lewis Grubbs's son has a connection with the Lehew family.

I seem to remember something about above Wm. B. Grubbs, but I can not place him at the moment.

Just today received an e-mail from Jerree looking for the parentage of a Wm. F.McKay husband to Mildred Smith, removed to MO.

I believe very likely the same Wm. F. McKay, eldest son of Robert S. McKay.

Her e-mail address Katt1930@aol.com

It would appear from a Frederick Co. VA Land Deed of the right time period that Catherine Grubs was the wife of a Stephen Grubs.

From compiled source Humphrey Grubs inventory was attented by a Stephen, Darvis, Betsy & Jesse Grubs held in Frederick Co. VA on 4 Feb 1806.

From compiled source will of Thomas Grubbs probated 6 Feb 1815: wife Elizabeth, brother Darius Grubbs, cousin: Stephen Grubb, to wife: 1/3 of estate, "balance between Smith Grubbs Thomas Grubbs his brother Polly Trinary daughter of Nancy Ann Trinary daughter of Nancy Trinary and Hezekiah Trinary son of Nancy Trinary and Sally Trinary daughter of Samuel Trinary. Thomas Grubbs to have two shares and all the others above named one equal share."

Noted that: Thomas Grubbs married Elizabeth Scott 21 Jan 1793. Darius Grubbs proved his Revolutionary War service, Frederick Co. VA Court Records 1834-1838 minutes.

Hope this is the item you wanted me to read.

The book "The Mackeys" by Beatrice M. Doughtie on page 94-95 has a little information about the couple--Dr. Robert Mackey & Catherine Snickers.

Said Robert-- as far as I know--not related in any way to the descendants of "our" Robert Mackay of the Shenandoah Valley.

This was Dr. Robert Mackey of Winchester who died in Frederick Co. VA will probated 2 May 1814, his wife was Catherine (or Katerin or Kitty) Snickers, daughter of Edward & Elizabeth (Taliaferro) Snickers. I believe he is mentioned in Fairfax Land Suit.

The names of their children are in the above book and they left records in Frederick Co. VA.

When Dr. Robert Mackay died he must have been the administer/executor/trustee for a lot of people. Because you can find said Catherine Mackay after his death acting as said Dr. Robert Mackay's executor, settling other people's affairs.

Just thinking off the top of my head, but I believe the above Thomas B. Martin has a connection to Lord Fairfax.

Back to Catherine Mackay, she also released a deed of trust to members of the Sowers & or Kerfoot family of Frederick/Clarke Co. VA.

If I am not making myself clear let me know. I just think she was acting as the executor of her late husband--Dr. Robert Mackay--who had acted as trustee for various people's estate.

On Monday my five films are at the public library for Shenandoah Land Deeds Reels 11-15 or years 1815-1827.

Hope to find something on my John D. Richards and more about the children of James MacKay Sr.

Then I think I will continue with Shenandoah Co. VA Land Deeds covering the years 1809-1815 & 1827-1830.

Then I will go back to viewing Frederick Co. VA Land Deeds back to the beginning of the county.

I have not forgotten you are interested in the surname Grubbs. If I find any new material I will tag it here on Michael's site.

I guess you have view the messages on Rootweb--Frederick & Genforum--Frederick about the Grubbs family. It would appear others are interested in the name in same location.

Good Luck.

Eugene, you better than I will know if the material published by Mr. O'Dell is correct or not.

page 107 of his book stated that the emigrates of the Grubb family into VA--Emanuel & John Grubb came from Brandywine Hundred, New Castle Co. DE.

Hite sold them 255a & 265a in the southermost part of Jost Hite's 1020a patent land.

By 1735 they had purchased/mortgage 730a on Bullskin, surveyed by Robert Brooke on 10 Oct 1734. This land is located between the communities of present-day Wheatland and northwest of Rippon, WVA with Highway 340 crossing on the east part.

It is not clear to me, believe Mr. O'Dell means that it was the above John, who an innholder, sold 265a to sons: Samuel & Adam Grubb, all of Brandywine Hundred, New Castle, DE on 20 Aug 1753. Adam leased his one-half to his brother Wm. on 21 Sep 1759 and later sold it to said Wm. on 22 Sep 1762.

Samuel & Wm. Grubb received a grant from Lord Fairfax on 1 Sep 1762 for 431a adjacent Benj. Grubb (formerly owned by Emanuel).

Benj. Grubb received 400a grant from Fairfax on "South Fork of Bullskin" adjacent his patent land on 28 Jun 1751. On 10 July 1764 he and his wife Hannah sold 255a which he received from Emanuel Grubb on 11 Feb 1747/48 and also 400a of Northern Neck Grant land to James Keith for 630 pounds.

On 23 Mar 1770, Thomas Grubb deposed that he was "59 years old and about 27 or 28 years ago he applied to Robert McKay to purchase the land that Walter Cunningham lives on." Born about 1710. Thomas may have been the son of Emanuel or perhaps the Thomas who sold land in NJ in 1737.

All of the above I copied from the work of Cecil O'Dell. As I go through Frederick Co. VA Land Deeds I hope to find out more about this family.

The problem I want to solve (not my direct line) was the parentage of Stephen Grubbs. He was the father of Virginia Grubbs who married Robert S. McKay.

I forget what are you seeking in regards to the Grubb family ?
