Does anyone have a copy of the quaker records (or any other records) that indicate that Hugh MacKay had a son named Robert? If you would share a copy, I would love to have one. Thanks.

Then we (myself & Dee Ann Buck) believe that Hugh Mackay wasn't his father as it is indicated in the LDS files. I'm not sure of the source of the document that said that Robert was the son of a Hugh Mackay and Jane Dunbar but it has been used in some of the websites I have linked to this one so I thought I'd take this time to try and clear this up some.

So that people will understand, just because you find something about your ancestors written in the genealogical records of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints doesn't mean it's true. These records are compiled, I believe, by what folks have submitted to them as well as what genealogy records they themselves have collected. It all goes in their database without any question as to it's accuracy. This is why I urge caution when looking through the LDS files and for folks not to get their hopes up when they "find" something there. You should try, if possible, to compare it with other sources.

Anyway, on with the story of Robert Mackay Sr. As far as I know there aren't any Quaker records that talk of Robert's parentage. He is the earliest person mentioned in the Hopewell Friends (Frederick County) records and I'm sure the same is true with the Nottingham records in New Jersey.

Dee Ann Buck has some theories about his origins and some possible links that she is exploring at the moment. One of these concerns a group of Scottish Quakers in Midlothian and another is in regards to a man named John Mackay.

I'm sure we will find Robert's true parentage one day and whether or not he actually descends from the Strathnaver Mackays.

Hope this helps.

Mr. Junior L. McKay you are not going to find a orginal record linking "our" Robert MacKay/McKay with Hugh MacKay of Scotland; because said link was created in Salt Lake, Utah, by the people who manage the computer.

They are merging & matching the information off of peoples disk without any kind of knowledge or documentation.

Don't waste your time, using what was created in 1990's to prove events that happened in the past.

Since I first heard it brought up at our most recent reunion I was concerned that many people in our vast Robert Mackay family would take it at face value and believe that "wow, we found Robert's parents and can trace his ancestry back to the early Mackay Chiefs at Strathnaver!!".

Well, we haven't found such a connection and again I urge people not to take information found in the LDS files as Gospel truth. LIke Dee Ann said about this we should consider where this stuff originated.

I just hope that all of the others out there doing the research on our family history understand this and will question anything they see in the LDS files.

Take heed, much of what is stored in the LDS data base is about as tempting as the forbidden fruit that Adam and Eve bit into. It looks pleasing but in the end it's nothing but a lie.

Just thought I`d stick my nose in the current dilema. My grandfather sent me some info on our MacKay ancestors that I`m fairly certain he had before all this became available on-line, and he has the same info reguarding Hugh MacKay being Robert Sr.`s father. That certainly doesn`t make it true, but it does mean there are other sources out there with the same info. I will attemt to find out exactly what that source is. I`ve only just dabbled in my MacKay ancestry at this point, I`m still stuck on my obsession with the Burnett side.

I'm glad you did enter into this discussion. The more people who see this the more they will question that alleged connection.

I have nothing against such a connection if it were true but the fact is the records of this Hugh Mackay and those of our Robert just don't fit which makes it highly unlikely that such a connection actually exists.

Being that there are different "sources" with this "connection" out there is nothing new I think. Chances are they obtained their information from the LDS files and thought it was true.

As of yet I don't know what the actual source for this alleged connection is.

Just in case anyone thought I have something personal against the LDS, I don't. The only beef I have is simply their seeming to be unwilling to correct mistakes in their database.

Sure, we all make mistakes because we're human but when a mistake is pointed out and proven nothing gets done about it what does that say?

They are supposed to be the largest genealogical database in the world but what good is it if a lot of the info. in it isn't correct and isn't going to be corrected?

Hunter Branson McKay and Beatrice MacKey Doughtie knew about Hugh MacKay in the 1950's is was a well known Scot. So people tried to play the game
"Pick a MacKay" to be the ancestor of our Robert MacKay of VA. Because he was famous.

There was never any evidence he was the father of Robert Mackay of Monmouth Co. NJ/MD/PA/VA. It was all made-up.

Impossible to prove a negative !!!

According to L.D.S. computer bank it was on 28 Oct 1995 that listed under

"History of Changes"
Source/Reasons: Automated Match/Merge

Submitter: Ancestral File Operations
15 East South Temple
Salt Lake, UT 84150

Added the parentage of Robert MacKay of Monmouth, New Jersey as the son of Hugh Mackay (Captain) & Jane Dunbar.
