I heard
dodi Fayads father bought, Dunrobin Castle. Also in 1975 Sutherland almost was cleared again by the british because they wanted to introduce wild game. By the year 2000, the house of Lords will be kaput. Lord Mckay does not even live in Scotland. I think he is a snob. I have met the guy. Hugh. There are Mackay chieiftains, and Mackay chiefs. Whats gon on with Clan Mackay in America and the rest of the big clans? I attended the clan MacKay in Canada, hardly any Americans there. They must now like any other clan organizations beside there own, they being the americans.I work on genealogy, and they do not have very good records.

Probably the reason no Americans were there is due to the fact that the Clan MacKay societies are divided according to regions.
Hence we have a Clan MacKay Society of New Scotland which has mostly people from that region attending it's functions.
We also have Clan MacKay, USA that in itself is divided into various regional branches.
I'm sure there is a Clan MacKay Society of Australia and definitely a Clan MacKay Society of Scotland.
As to the present Chief of Clan MacKay I've never met the man.
The lands of Strathnaver I feel should one day be bought back. Maybe since Dodi Fayed's father owns it he might be more open to suggestions. Don't think he sits too well with the royals. Could be wrong.
All it takes is for someone to have enough money or perhaps a group of people living closer to Strathnaver to pool resources and purchase some of the old land back.
The fact that the British government can kick people off of the land is another reason why Scotland should have more say in the decisions of the country.

Also, I would like to mention that we have (in my family) The Robert MacKay Clan which is a society based on the descendants of the Quaker pioneer Robert MacKay Sr. and some closely related families.
This is covered in the section of my website devoted to the Robert MacKay Clan.
We have pretty good records of the family of Robert MacKay Sr. We are lacking in who his ancestors are however. Still searching for them. But many of his descendants are pretty well traced out.

I've researched and found that our McCoy's, very possibly, originated from the MacKay surname. I would like to recruit your help in the Ohio area, where all of my line has been since around 1800. Clinton Co. is next to Highland Co., where most of my line settled when first arriving in Ohio. I think that cencus takers may have altered thier name to its present spelling . Highland Co. had many Campbell's who married into McCoy's numerous times over the years and remember one of the Campbell's marrying a MacKay somewhere . Some of my McCoy's were in Clinton Co. and Adams Co. I also have relatives in Fayette Co. So far, your family has been the only true clue to my search since I have not been able to find how my line came to Ohio ! I'm thinking that they may have been illiterate at the time of the first census and adopted this form of spelling the surname. Also, my 4th great grandfather, Edmund McCoy, married a Quaker girl in Highland Co. by the name of Mary "Polly" Johnson. I have great records on thier Quaker background. James Johnson was her father who moved his family to Fairfield Township, Highland Co. Ohio, from Bedford Co. Virginia in 1811. If you ever need Quaker background let me know ! Thanks for anything that you may be able to provide ! You have a very nice and well organized Web Site also ! Virgil F. McCoy

I'm very familiar with Quaker records. Robert MacKay Sr.'s family was affiliated with the Society of Friends. A large group of friends (among them McKays) went to Ohio and settled in the Clintion Co. (and surrounding areas) vicinity. Most of these are descendants of Moses McKay, great-grandson of Robert Sr. Every year for over 130 years they hold "The Collett-McKay Picnic" on the second Saturday in August. I had the privelage of attending one of these events back in 1990 but I haven't been able to make the trip since then.
Our name was misspelled even in the Quaker records as where sometimes it was spelled as McCoy or McKoy and the most popular McKay. Robert Sr. always signed his name as "MacKay" with the "a" over the "C". There is a website linked to the General Clan MacKay links section which has a sound file showing how the name originally was pronounced in Gaelic.
It's always possible your family could be another branch of Robert Sr. or an entirely different branch altogether. Even though many of us spell the name as "McKay" there is always the likelyhood that there are some within the Robert MacKay family who spell the name as "McCoy" or another variant.

I seem to recall 1850 census in your location having McCoy in the area in question--giving their place of birth as NC.
I can't see that they would be related to the descendants of Robert MacKay/McKay of NJ/PA/VA.
Also there were McKay/McKee/McCoy living in early Shenandoah Co. VA who were not related to our MacKay/McKay.
Also another researcher told me that the McCoy of Fauquier Co. VA were from Frederick Co. MARYLAND. I have not idea how they fit into the mix.

I just saw your website and am thrilled. I am related to Robert McKay, Sr. - wife Ann Brown - son James. I need to read more of your website as you obviously know much more than I. I do have information that James McKay and his children did settle in Virginia - Shennandoah Valley. My lineage goes off James, to Robert McKay IV, to David, to Robert, to John Jarret to Edwin to Ida May to my father, Edward Mack. If I can provide information I am happy to do so. As I read more of yours, I'm sure I will be asking questions.
