--CUMBERLAND-- Republicans looked to sweep races for the Allegany County Board of Commissioners Tuesday night.

In complete but unofficial returns, Republican Mike McKay of Cumberland led all candidates with 11,696 votes, or 21.59 percent of the total. He was followed closely by fellow Republican Creade Brodie Jr., with 11,398 votes or 21.04 percent.

Republican Bill Valentine edged Democrat Tom Striplin for the final seat, according to unofficial returns. Valentine had 9,133 votes or 16.86 percent, and Striplin had 9,097 votes or 16.79 percent.

Democrats Bill DuVall and Ed Hedrick trailed the field. DuVall had 7,639 votes, or 14.10 percent. Hedrick had 5,012 votes or 9.25 percent.

Write-in candidates received 170 votes. Official write-in candidates included Democrat Rick Atkinson of Cumberland, Republican Randall Mellotte of LaVale and Republican Frank Nethken of Cumberland. The breakdown of write-in votes is not available until the votes are canvassed.

The totals include early voting, but not absentee or provisional ballots.

Allegany County was assured three new commissioners following the primary election, when all three incumbents lost their primary bids. Six candidates advanced after the primary election, and three write-in candidates filed for the general election. The top three vote-getters win election to the Allegany County Board of Commissioners.

The outgoing incumbent commissioners are James J. Stakem, Robert Hutcheson and Dale R. Lewis.
