Dear Members and Friends of Bethel:
On August 25, 2013, at 11:00 AM, the Annual Meeting and Traditional
Service will be held at Old Bethel.
Our honored speaker will be Tracy Fitzsimmons, Ph.D., Shenandoah
University's 16th and first female president since the 1875 founding and one of the
youngest university presidents in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Prior to joining the
Shenandoah faculty, she was a tenured faculty member and faculty leader at the
University of Redlands in California. She leads 4,000 students, 250 full-time faculty
and 450 staff at the institution's 129 acre site in Winchester as well as a satellite
campus in Leesburg. Following the January, 2010 Haiti earthquake, Dr. Fitzsimmons
led several trips to that country to assist in its ongoing recovery. With regional
expertise in Latin America, she has taught courses on world and Latin American
politics, global democratization, women and politics in Latin America. Her
Undergraduate Degree is from Princeton University, and her Master's and Doctoral
Degrees are from Stanford University in, respectively, Latin American studies and
political science. Dr. Fitzsimmons currently serves on the boards of the Shentel,
NAICU, Blue Ridge District BB&T Bank and Powhatan School. She resides in
Reliance with her husband and children.
The officiant will be The Reverend Karin MacPhail of Cunningham Chapel
Parish. Carol Westervelt will serve as the organist.
Madeline MacNeil will provide special music.
Our traditional "under the oaks" covered dish picnic will take place
immediately following the service, rain or shine, so please bring food to share and,
perhaps, a lawn chair. Any questions regarding the picnic may be directed to our
Picnic Chairperson, Janell Hoffman, at 540-837-2607.
Click on this link for a form for 2013-2014 dues and contributions form. With
continuing restoration projects, a tax-deductible contribution to Old Bethel would be
greatly appreciated. Join us in support of this old church and the role that it serves
in the community.
Calendar Reminder: Our very meaningful and memorable Christmas Lessons
and Carols Service which will be held on Sunday, December 22, 2013, at 5:00 PM.
We look forward to seeing you at the Annual Meeting on August 25th!!
Yours very truly,
